Bi Do (Red Pumpkin) Print E-mail

Bi Do is a standard among local Hanoians for well executed, straight forward home-style dishes, at can’t be beat prices.  There is nothing fancy about the restaurant, but it is clean and does the trick in offering a wide range of typical dishes, with consistent quality, if sometimes spotty service (especially if you are up on the 4th floor).

Recommended dishes: clay pot eggplant (ca tim ap chao), clay pot fish (ca kho), tomato and clam sour soup (canh ngheo) and simple stir fried vegetables with garlic (rau xao toi).  Also the battered tofu is excellent.

Coordinates:  Bi Do is in the neighborhood south of Hoan Kiem Lake, at no. 5 Le Ngoc Han.  Le Ngoc Han is just west of Lo Duc, and the restaurant is about 10 meters south of intersection of Le Ngoc Han and Tran Xuan Soan (Le Ngoc Han is a very short street running north to south from Tran Xuan Soan to Pho Hoa Ma).  A bit hard to find, but it’s a short hook west, then south, from Lo Duc.  After dark, look for the neon sign with a giant red pumpkin on it.
