Chim Sao, often called The Bird Place by expats, is named after the talkative macaw that lives on the ground floor. There are about 4 small antique tables downstairs (one being a big wooden bed that you can sit on like a platform table), and floor seating on cushions and mats upstairs.  The restaurant also doubles as an art gallery, featuring rotating exhibits and special events. It is unique for serving up small dishes of Vietnamese fare, tapas style, so Chim Sao offers a good opportunity for tasting a wide range of dishes. Truly good food in a cozy setting when it first opened, some reports are that the service and kitchen have become slipped from their initial high standards, pulling stunts such as serving up claypot dishes for presentation only, after sautéing the ingredients rather than slow cooking them in the vessel. The jury’s still out but we make this recommendation with a caveat.

Coordinates: Chim Sao is located at 65 Ngo Hue, a small alley running east from Phố Huế, south of Hoàn Kiếm Lake.  The head of the ally is where number 125 Phố Huế would be. Once in the alley, the restaurant is on your right side, about 20 yards in.  Listen for the squawking bird.
