Most people come to Hanoi ready to eat.  And in Hanoi, street food is not merely a quaint or exotic culinary excursion, but is central to how people eat and helps define the culture and rhythm of the city.  However, while dining on the street sounds tempting and adventurous to visitors, it can be understandably intimidating.  The aim of our Street Food Primer is to edify and to demystify Hanoi’s many and glorious street food offerings. 

Each section here describes a range of dishes within a particular category of Hanoi street food, and following each description, we guide you to a few of our favorite spots for sampling these snacks (most street food stalls specialize in a single dish).  We’ve also included some FAQs that might help answer some of your concerns about eating on the street.
