Who would guess that Hanoi has a state-of-the-art art house cinema? And better yet, it’s housed in a historic building, set far back from the street, surrounding a spacious terracotta-tiled courtyard sheltered by an enormous century-old tree. The tables are serviced by an open courtyard bar, offering cocktails, draft beer and wines by the glass. The menu has a broad international selection of food including cha gio (small fried Vietnamese spring rolls), quesadillas, steak frites and spaghetti Bolognese. Movies are screened in many languages—if you are in town for more than a few days, stop by, enjoy a drink under the tree and pick up a schedule.
Coordinates: Just south of Hoan Kiem Lake, across the street from the American Club entrance. Look for the sign for Hotel des Artistes and the wide arched tunnel/alley at 22A Hai Ba Trung. Walk down the alley, past the motorbike parking, turn right at the end of the alley and it opens onto the courtyard.
