No spitting subway sign
Before you come

Be sure to get your hepatitis shots before traveling to China. As much as Beijing looks like a modern city, general sanitation and food safety practices are still substandard.  It is impossible to prepare yourself mentally from the widespread practice of public mucus dispensing through spitting, nose picking and open air nose blowing, but do bring a supply of hand sanitizer and/or alcohol based hand wipes.
